Gray 28 29 30 A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 31 32 ______________ 33 34 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 35 36 __________________ 37 38 To recognize the month of June 2024 as “Gun Violence Awareness Month” in the District 39 of Columbia. 40 WHEREAS, Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager from Chicago who marched in the presidential 41 inaugural parade in January 2013 and was tragically shot and killed weeks later, should be 42 celebrating her 27 th birthday this year; 43 2 WHEREAS, to help honor Hadiya and to raise awareness of the epidemic of gun violence 44 in the United States, a national coalition of organizations has designated the first Friday in 45 June as National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the month of June as Gun Violence 46 Awareness Month; 47 WHEREAS, there are an average of nearly 60 gun homicides across the country each 48 day, and nearly 100 Americans are harmed by guns every day; 49 WHEREAS, in the District of Columbia in 2023, 235 people were killed by gunfire and 50 749 more were injured; 51 WHEREAS, in the District of Columbia in 2023, 16 children were killed by gunfire and 52 93 more were injured; 53 WHEREAS, gun violence is a disease and public health crisis and “prevention” means 54 the absence of that disease; and 55 WHEREAS, the Council encourages all District residents to look for ways to support 56 their local communities’ efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence and honor and 57 value precious human life: 58 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 59 resolution may be cited as the “Gun Violence Awareness Month Recognition Resolution of 60 2024.” 61 Sec. 2. The Council declares the month of June 2024 as “Gun Violence Awareness 62 Month” in the District of Columbia. 63 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 64 the District of Columbia Register. 65
