Nadeau 18 19 20 ______________________________ 21 Councilmember Anita Bonds 22 23 24 25 A CEREMONAL RESOLUTION 26 __________ 27 28 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 29 __________ 30 31 32 To recognize June as Men’s Health Month and promote public awareness around men’s health 33 issues. 34 35 WHEREAS, Men’s Health Month is part of an ongoing international effort to educate men, boys, 36 and their families about receiving regular disease prevention screening and living healthier lifestyles; 37 38 WHEREAS, Men’s Health Month began in 1994 with the Congressional passage of Men’s Health 39 Week June 10 th – 14 th , sponsored by Senator Bob Dole and Congressman Bill Richardson; 40 41 WHEREAS, the National Men’s Health Week bill was signed by President Clinton and became 42 public law on May 31, 1994; 43 44 WHEREAS, thousands of organizations across the globe participate in Men’s Health Month, 45 promoting the health and wellness of men, boys, fathers, and their families; 46 47 2 WHEREAS, the Men’s Health Network sponsors health awareness fairs and events on Capitol 48 Hill that are attended by hundreds of lawmakers and staff; 49 50 WHEREAS, nationwide, life expectancy for men averages five years fewer than women, with 51 men experiencing higher rates of health problems such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease, and 52 premature mortality; 53 54 WHEREAS, the COVID- 19 pandemic had a devastating impact on men’s health in the United 55 States, dropping men’s life expectancy by two years according to a study by Oxford University; 56 57 WHEREAS, the growing epidemic of suicide and substance abuse requires concerted effort to 58 raise awareness of unrecognized and undiagnosed depression and mental stress in men and boys; 59 60 WHEREAS, Men’s Health Month is a time for the public to recognize the mental and physical 61 health needs of men and boys while encouraging fathers to be role models for their children through 62 preventative health screenings, healthy living and seeking needed help; and 63 64 WHEREAS, “Wear Blue Day” will be recognized on June 14, 2024 to support men’s health 65 awareness. 66 67 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, that this resolution 68 may be cited as the “ Men’s Health Month Recognition Resolution of 2024”. 69 70 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes the month of June as Men’s Health 71 Month. 72 73 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in the 74 District of Columbia Register. 75
