White Jr. Councilmember Charles Allen 7 8 9 10 A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 11 __________ 12 13 14 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 15 16 ____________________ 17 18 To recognize Hispanic Heritage Month and the contributions the Hispanic community 19 has made to the District of Columbia. 20 21 WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration from September 15 to 22 October 15 of the history and culture of the U.S. Latino and Hispanic communities, as well as a 23 commemoration of how those communities influenced and contributed to American society; 24 25 WHEREAS, the origins of Hispanic Heritage Month date back to California in the 1960s, 26 where Latino and Hispanic residents joined in multiple societal movements, including the civil 27 rights movement and the farm worker protection movement; 28 29 WHEREAS, the Hispanic community, which make up approximately 11% of the 30 population of the District of Columbia, have contributed to the vibrant and diverse culture of the 31 District, including hosting performances at the GALA Hispanic Theater and providing cultural 32 programs throughout the city; 33 34 WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month also contains Fiesta DC, an annual celebration of 35 Latino heritage in the District. The event, which takes place just blocks from the White House, 36 includes a celebration of Latino food, culture, and a “Parade of the Nations”; 37 38 WHEREAS, Hispanic and Latino businesses have also been critical to the business 39 environment of the District. Organizations such as the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of 40 Commerce help Hispanic and Latino businesses develop and thrive in the District; 41 42 WHEREAS, Hispanic and Latino community members have made great public service 43 contributions in the District, including Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and 44 Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Sonia Sotomayor; and 45 46 WHEREAS, Hispanic multiculturalism, diversity, and leadership in the District has 47 contributed to a stronger, healthier District. 48 49 IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF 50 COLUMBIA, that this resolution may be cited as the “Hispanic Heritage Month Recognition 51 Resolution of 2024”. 52 53 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month and 54 the contributions the Hispanic and Latino communities have made to the District of Columbia. 55 56 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 57 the District of Columbia Register. 58
