To recognize and honor the Washington Spirit for their incredible 2024 season, which 27
included an appearance in the National Women’s Soccer League Championship. 28
WHEREAS, the Washington Spirit was founded on November 21, 2012, and is an 29
inaugural member of the National Women’s Soccer League; 30
WHEREAS, the Washington Spirit made their third finals appearance on Saturday, 31
November 23, 2024, against the Orlando Pride at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City; 32
WHEREAS, t he Washington Spirit tied for the most wins in the NWSL regular season, 33
with 18 wins; 34
WHEREAS, the Washington Spirit standout Croix Bethune received three end- of-season 35
awards: being named the 2024 Rookie of the Year, making the Best XI First Team, and making 36
history by earning the NWSL's first -ever Midfielder of the Year award; 37
WHEREAS, t he Washington Spirit finished the 2024 season with a franchise-record 19 38
wins, 18 of which came in the regular season, with the other coming from their playoff victory 39
against Gotham FC; 40
WHEREAS, the Washington Spirit boasted a star-studded lineup, with three players 41
selected to the NWSL's Best XI First Team: defender Casey Krueger, midfielder Croix Bethune, 42 and forward Trinity Rodman. Additionally, two players, defender Tara McKeown and midfielder 43
Hal Hershfelt, were named to the Best XI Second Team; 44
WHEREAS, t he Washington Spirit set a new club record for the most goals scored in a 45
single season, with 51; 46
WHEREAS, the Washington Spirit sold out Audi Field three times during the 2024 47
season; 48
IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF 49
COLUMBIA, that this resolution may be cited as the “Washington Spirit Recognition Resolution 50
of 2024”. 51
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and honors the Washington 52
Spirit for their incredible 2024 season and for their contribution to sports and to the District of 53
Columbia, for setting the standard of excellence, and for paving the way for the growth of 54
women’s soccer in the city. 55
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately. 56
