1 __________________________ 2 Councilmember Matthew Frumin 3 4 A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 5 ______________ 6 7 8 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 9 10 ____________________________ 11 12 To recognize Jonathan R. Alger for his inauguration as the 16 th President of American 13 University. 14 15 WHEREAS, Mr. Alger officially began his service to American University as its 16 th 16 president on July 1, 2024; 17 18 WHEREAS, President Alger presides over an institution with eight schools and colleges, 19 over 170 programs, and more than 13,000 students, that has for 132 years fostered the next 20 generation of change makers; 21 22 WHEREAS, President Alger previously served as president of James Madison University 23 for 12 years, where throughout his tenure the university advanced academic achievement, a sense 24 of community, civic activism by the students and community engagement by the University; 25 26 WHEREAS, President Alger serves as the chair of the national board of directors for the 27 American Association of Colleges and Universities, chair of the Association of Governing 28 Boards’ Council of Presidents, and on the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics; 29 30 WHEREAS, President Alger has already demonstrated his desire and commitment to the 31 American University community through over 30 listening sessions during the fall semester and 32 the launch of The Civic Life initiative; and 33 34 WHEREAS, the Council shares the excitement of the American University community as 35 it embarks on its next chapter under President Alger’s leadership. 36 37 IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF 38 COLUMBIA, that this resolution may be cited as the “American University President Jonathan 39 R. Alger Inaugural Recognition Resolution of 2025”. 40 41 Sec. 2. The Council and District of Columbia welcome President Alger and his family 42 and embrace his desire to contribute to American University and the D.C. metro region 43 community. 44 45 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 46 the District of Columbia Register. 47
