IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 25

To declare the month of March, 2025 as “Problem Gambling Awareness Month” in the District of 29 
Columbia and to recognize the importance of raising awareness of problem gambling as a 30 
critical public health issue impacting millions of Americans of all ages, races, and ethnic 31 
backgrounds. 32 
 33 
WHEREAS, March is designated as Problem Gambling Awareness Month by the 34 
National Council on Problem Gambling;  35 
WHEREAS, problem gambling has significant societal and economic costs for 36 
indiv	; 37   
 
WHEREAS, the National Council on Problem Gambling estimates that between 12,000 38 
and 15,000 District residents are affected by gambling addiction, with limited resources available 39 
for those seeking help;  40 
WHEREAS, in 2024, the National Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800 GAMBLER) 41 
received 5,494 calls, texts, and chats from the District;  42 
WHEREAS, indiv	suicide, drug or 43 
alcohol dependence, and bankruptcy; and  44 
WHEREAS, problem gambling is treatable, and effective treatment can significantly 45 
reduce harm to both indiv	e.   46 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 47 
resolution may be cited as the “Problem Gambling Awareness Month Recognition Resolution of 48 
2025.” 49 
Sec. 2.  The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes the importance of addressing 50 
problem gambling as a public health issue and pledges to support efforts to prevent, intervene, 51 
and treat problem gambling within the District and declares March, 2025 as “Problem Gambling 52 
Awareness Month” in the District of Columbia. 53 
Sec. 3.  This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 54 
the District of Columbia Register. 55
