1 1 2 ________________________ 3 Councilmember Brooke Pinto 4 5 6 7 A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 8 9 _________________________ 10 11 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 12 13 _________________________ 14 15 16 To recognize, honor, and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mu Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma 17 Theta Sorority, Incorporated, at The George Washington University. 18 19 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, founded on January 13, 1913, at 20 Howard University, is an esteemed organization of college-educated women committed to the 21 constructive development of its members and to public service, with a primary focus on the 22 Black community; 23 WHEREAS, on April 20, 1975, nine dynamic women chartered the Mu Beta Chapter of 24 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, at The George Washington University, making history 25 as the first Black Greek-lettered organization on campus; 26 WHEREAS, the visionary charter members—Francine Burnett, Linda Finch, Tanya 27 Goodman, Monica Jordan, Carolyn Marks, Helen Quander, Deborah Randolph, Ellen Wells, and 28 Theresa Weston—established a legacy of excellence that has flourished for five decades; 29 WHEREAS, for 50 years, the Mu Beta Chapter has exemplified Delta Sigma Theta's 30 commitment to sisterhood, scholarship, and service through numerous community initiatives, 31 including the Walk to End HIV with the Whitman-Walker Foundation, Voter Registration 32 2 Tabling with GWVotes, and participation in The George Washington University's Martin Luther 33 King, Jr., Day of Service; 34 WHEREAS, the Mu Beta Chapter has served as a beacon of leadership, academic 35 excellence, and civic engagement, fostering the development of women leaders who have made 36 significant contributions to the District of Columbia, the nation, and communities around the 37 world; 38 WHEREAS, the Mu Beta Chapter continues to embody the sorority's mission through 39 dedicated service to The George Washington University campus and the greater Washington 40 Metropolitan area, creating meaningful impact through thoughtful programming and community 41 outreach; and 42 WHEREAS, in April 2025, the Mu Beta Chapter will commemorate its 50th Charter Day 43 with a week-long celebration, bringing together current members, alumnae, and supporters to 44 honor this historic milestone and reaffirm their commitment to continued service. 45 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 46 resolution may be cited as the "Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated - Mu Beta Chapter 50th 47 Anniversary Recognition Resolution of 2025”. 48 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and celebrates the 50th 49 anniversary of the Mu Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, at The George 50 Washington University for five decades of exemplary service, leadership, and dedication to the 51 advancement of the District of Columbia community. 52 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 53 the District of Columbia Register. 54
