 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 

 152nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY 

   

 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 12 

   

 HONORING MAY 7-13, 2023 AS DELAWARE CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES WEEK. 

   

   WHEREAS, on May 5, 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first full week of May as National Correctional Officers Week, in recognition of the vital public service provided by correctional officers across the country; and    WHEREAS, the operation of correctional facilities represents a critical component of the criminal justice system in Delaware and the United States; and    WHEREAS, correctional officers and employees are responsible for maintaining safety, order, and human dignity within our correctional facilities, often under challenging and demanding conditions, requiring professionalism, dedication, and courage; and    WHEREAS, correctional officers and employees work to protect the right of the public to be safeguarded from criminal activity, and are responsible for the care, custody, and dignity of the inmates charged to their care; and    WHEREAS, the officers and employees of the Delaware Department of Correction exemplify these qualities, carrying out their duties with unwavering commitment and distinction; and    WHEREAS, correctional officers and employees often face danger and violence in their daily work lives, yet their role is essential to the functioning of our society and deserves recognition and appreciation; and   WHEREAS, in 1996, Congress expanded and renamed this special week "National Correctional Officers and Employees Week" in recognition of all those employed with city, state, and federal correctional departments; and    WHEREAS, the American Correctional Association calls upon all Americans to honor these professionals for their service to their communities, States, and to the Nation; and    WHEREAS, it is fitting to set aside a special week in the State of Delaware to honor these dedicated public servants for their commitment, sacrifices, and contributions.   NOW, THEREFORE:    BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware that May 7-13, 2023 is hereby recognized as Delaware Correctional Officers and Employees Week to honor and celebrate their service and commitment.
