Briggs King on behalf of all Representatives HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 152nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 16 RECOGNIZING AND HONORING DELAWARE FATHERS ON SUNDAY, JUNE 18,2023. WHEREAS, Fathers Day is celebrated across the United States on the third Sunday in June; and WHEREAS, the tradition began with Sonora Smart Dodd who proposed the idea of Fathers Day in 1910 after her own father, a widower and Civil War veteran, raised 6 children by himself; and WHEREAS, President Calvin Coolidge in 1924, supported the idea of a National Fathers Day in order to establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations; and WHEREAS, President Lyndon Johnson signed a Presidential proclamation in 1966 declaring the third Sunday of June as Fathers Day; and WHEREAS, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Fathers Day in 1971; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate that the members of the House of Representatives of the 152 nd General Assembly honor the States fathers of all kinds, including biological fathers, adoptive fathers, stepfathers, or others who have fulfilled that role in the lives of children for their important contributions to their children and families. NOW, THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, that Sunday, June 18, 2023 is hereby recognized as Fathers Day in the State of Delaware. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that on Fathers Day all residents of the State are encouraged to celebrate fathers and honor them in the original spirit of the day.
