 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 198 

   

 RECOGNIZING JUNE 2024, AS "ALZHEIMERS AND BRAIN AWARENESS MONTH" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE. 

   

  WHEREAS, Alzheimers disease, a degenerative brain disease and the most common form of dementia, tragically robs individuals of their memories and leads to progressive mental and physical impairments; and   WHEREAS, Alzheimers disease begins more than 20 years before memory loss and other symptoms develop; and   WHEREAS, there are no known treatments to prevent or cure Alzheimers disease; and   WHEREAS, an estimated 6.9 million Americans aged 65 and over have Alzheimers disease; and approximately 22,000 Delawareans are currently living with Alzheimers; and    WHEREAS, 1 in 3 seniors die with Alzheimers or another dementia and nearly half of all caregivers who provide help to older adults do so for someone living with Alzheimer's or another dementia; and   WHEREAS, the direct costs to American society of caring for those with Alzheimers is valued at over $360 billion, while more than 11 million caregivers provide nearly $350 billion of unpaid care to those with Alzheimers and other dementia; and   WHEREAS, in Delaware, approximately 31,000 family members and friends cared for individuals living with Alzheimers and other dementia, providing 46 million hours of unpaid care, with the annual value of this caregiving totaling $909 million; and   WHEREAS, the State of Delaware recognizes the challenges faced by the individuals, families, friends, and caregivers dealing with Alzheimers disease; and   WHEREAS, researchers continue to search for a cause and a cure for the disease; and   WHEREAS, the State of Delaware recognizes the efforts of the Alzheimers Association to promote awareness to fight Alzheimers disease and all other dementia.   NOW, THEREFORE:    BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the month of June 2024 is recognized as Alzheimer's and Brain Awar eness Month.   BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all residents of Delaware are urged to wear purple to help spread global awareness of Alzheimers disease and the ongoing efforts to rid the world of Alzheimer's and all other dementia.
