 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 199

DESIGNATING OCTOBER 9-16, 2024, AS DYSPRAXIA AWARENESS WEEK IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, developmental coordination disorder (DCD), also referred to as dyspraxia, is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects 5-6% of the population, which translates to approximately 20 million people in the United States and an average of 1 or 2 children in every classroom; and WHEREAS, DCD affects coordination, cognitive abilities, and fine and gross motor skills which are vital in performing lifelong daily tasks and routines. This can include tying ones shoes, using utensils, writing, riding a bike, or throwing and catching a ball; and WHEREAS, dyspraxia symptoms vary widely, but often also include issues with speech, attention, executive function, and processing speed. Additionally, difficulty making friends, and anxiety and depression may result from the frustration and stigma of struggling to keep up with peers; and WHEREAS, the nonprofit organization, Dyspraxia DCD America, founded in 2019, is dedicated to raising awareness, providing resources to families and individuals, educating the medical and educational communities, and supporting research; and WHEREAS, recognizing dyspraxia early allows for timely intervention and support, which can significantly improve outcomes for individuals with dyspraxia, helping them develop coping strategies and skills to navigate daily challenges; and WHEREAS, increasing awareness about DCD promotes understanding and acceptance, reducing the stigma and misconceptions surrounding the condition, and encourages educators and employers to implement accommodations and support systems to help individuals with dyspraxia succeed in educational and work environments; and WHEREAS, living with dyspraxia can be challenging and may have a secondary impact on individuals' mental health and self-esteem. Furthering this awareness can promote support from peers, family members, and communities and lead to support for initiatives that promote early identification, intervention, and policies and practices that accommodate the needs of individuals with dyspraxia; and WHEREAS, fostering this sense of belonging and reducing feelings of isolation through this awareness allows society to focus on individuals abilities rather than their limitations, and creates an environment where everyones potential can be recognized. NOW, THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the General Assembly affirms the importance of recognizing dyspraxia and hereby designates October 9-16, 2024, as Dyspraxia Awareness Week in the State of Delaware. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the General Assembly encourages expanded efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive society where all individuals can thrive and reach their full potential.
