 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 71 

   

 RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER 2023 AS "PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS" MONTH IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE. 

   

  WHEREAS, prostate cancer is a type of cancer that typically develops slowly in the prostate gland; however, it can also develop rapidly and spread beyond the prostate; and   WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men other than skin cancer; and   WHEREAS, 1 in 456 men under 50 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer within their lifetime. The rate of occurrence increases to 1in 54 for ages 50-59, 1 in 19 for ages 60-69, and 1-11 for men 70 and older; and   WHEREAS, older men and African-American men have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer; and   WHEREAS, the average age of diagnosis is 66, and diagnosis before 40 is rare but not impossible; and   WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates in 2023, 288,300 new cases and 34,700 deaths in the United States, with 1,330 new cases and 100 deaths estimated in the State of Delaware; and   WHEREAS, amidst so much optimism and progress in the last 10 years, prostate cancer is second to lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer death among men in the U.S.; and   WHEREAS, with roughly 3.1 million men in the United States currently living with prostate cancer, 98% of men do survive due to early detection and diagnosis; and   WHEREAS, some symptoms of prostate cancer include: the frequent urge to urinate, difficulty urinating, blood in urine, and pain in the lower back and hips; and   WHEREAS, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month was established in 2003 by President George W. Bush; and   WHEREAS, it is recommended by the Prostate Conditions Education Council that starting at age 40, men should have a baseline Prostate-Specific Antigen test and a Digital Rectal Exam to check for prostate cancer; and   WHEREAS, the color that represents prostate cancer awareness is light blue.   NOW, THEREFORE:    BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the General Assembly designates September 2023 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in the State of Delaware.
