WHEREAS, in 1948, Herbert Barnes, Sr., Superintendent of the State Police, founded Camp Barnes for Delawares youth as a recreational facility designed to provide an alternative to problems facing the juvenile population of the State; and WHEREAS, the camp began along Miller Creek in Sussex County just off of the Assawoman Bay; and WHEREAS, the camp, later named Camp Barnes in honor of the founder grew to provide numerous opportunities to the youth of Delaware including fishing, swimming, and boating, along with other team building and leadership skills; and WHEREAS, Camp Barnes continues to provide free camping opportunities to the youth of Delaware throughout the summer months; and WHEREAS, the Delaware State Police remain dedicated to the preservation and growth of Camp Barnes through fundraising and other efforts designed to maintain a first-class facility; and WHEREAS, Camp Barnes has now reached its 75 th year in service; and WHEREAS, Camp Barnes and the Delaware State Police remain committed to serving the youth of Delaware. NOW, THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 152 nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that we celebrate the 75 th anniversary of Camp Barnes.
