 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 9 

   

 RECOGNIZING JANUARY 1, 2025 AS HAITIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE. 

   

   WHEREAS, January 1st marks the anniversary of Haiti's declaration of independence from France in 1804, a significant event in world history as Haiti became the first independent nation in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the first post-colonial independent black-led nation in the world; and    WHEREAS, The Haitian Revolution began in 1791 when enslaved, free Africans, and people of color, began a rebellion against French authority in what was then known as Saint-Domingue; and     WHEREAS, The Haitian Revolution made Haiti the only nation whose independence was gained as part of a successful rebellion; and    WHEREAS, Commander Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution inspired millions of free and enslaved people of African descent to seek freedom and equality throughout the Atlantic world; and    WHEREAS, the Haitian Revolution was a landmark in the struggle for freedom and human rights, inspiring oppressed peoples worldwide and contributing to the abolition of slavery; and    WHEREAS, the free nation was renamed under the direction of Jean-Jaques Dessalines from Saint-Domingue to Haiti, which in Taino means country of mountains; and    WHEREAS, Haiti is the third most common birthplace for foreign-born Delaware residents accounting for 0.5% of the population; and    WHEREAS, Haitian citizens have made substantial contributions to the cultural, economic, and social fabric of our society, which has in turn enriched our community with their vibrant heritage and traditions; and    WHEREAS, the observance of Haitian Independence Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of the Haitian people .    NOW, THEREFORE:     BE IT RESOLVED that the 153rd Delaware House of Representatives hereby recognizes January 1st as Haitian Independence Day and encourages all members of our community to join in the celebration and reflection on the significance of this historic day.
