A resolution recognizing June 2022 as "Caribbean 2
Heritage Month" in Florida. 3

WHEREAS, from a region that conjures images of a scenic 5
paradise, Caribbean Americans are as vibrant as the islands from 6
which they come, possessing a wealth of talent and history that 7
reverberates throughout this great state and nation, and 8
WHEREAS, as educators, authors, community leaders, 9
activists, athletes, artists, musician s, and politicians, 10
Caribbean Americans have made their mark in every facet of our 11
society and have contributed to the betterment and diversity of 12
our state and nation, and 13
WHEREAS, counted among many famous sons and daughters of 14
the Caribbean are civil r ights activist W.E.B. Du Bois; United 15
States Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton; United 16
States Secretary of State Colin Powell; United States 17
Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm; Oscar -nominated actress Cicely 18
Tyson; Oscar-winning actor Sidney Poitier who was born in Miami ; 19
author, poet, and civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson; 20
musician, actor, and social activist Harry Belafonte; Haitian 21
Revolution General Henri Christophe; actor and author Louise 22
Bennett-Coverley; writer and nationalist leader José Martí; 23
professor of literature Mayra Santos -Febres; and numerous others 24
who have displayed great strength and resiliency while serving 25

as pioneers among the people of the Caribbean, and 26
WHEREAS, not only has the United States thrived as a 27
country of immigrants, but Florida has flourished from the many 28
Caribbean immigrants and their descendants who have called this 29
state home, united by common values and by the promise of a 30
better tomorrow, NOW, THEREFORE, 31

Be It Resolved by the House of Representat ives of the State of 33

That June 2022 is recognized as "Caribbean Heritage Month" 36
in Florida and all communities and individuals throughout the 37
state are encouraged to celebrate their cultural and historical 38
bonds. 39
