HR 8047 2022 hr8047-00 Page 1 of 2 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S House Resolution 1 A resolution designating February 2022 as VATER 2 Syndrome Awareness Month in the State of Florida. 3 4 WHEREAS, VATER Syndrome refers to a cluster of birth 5 defects occurring simultaneously, affecting primarily the 6 vertebrae, anus, trachea, esophagus, and renal system, and 7 WHEREAS, a variant of VATER Syndrome, known as VACTERL 8 Association, involves additional cardiac anomalies, resulting in 9 up to 75 percent of patien ts also experiencing congenital heart 10 disease, as well abnormalities in limb development, which occur 11 in up to 70 percent of patients and increase the risk of kidney 12 and urological defects, and 13 WHEREAS, because this disorder manifests such a wide range 14 of signs and symptoms, it is often difficult to identify but is 15 estimated to affect one in 10,000 to 40,000 newborns, who are 16 diagnosed when presenting abnormalities in three or more of the 17 aforementioned areas, and 18 WHEREAS, while genetic and environmental factors are 19 believed to contribute to VATER Syndrome and VACTERL 20 Association, the specific cause is not well understood, and 21 universities in this state are currently researching diagnostic 22 and treatment techniques in the hope of improving the lives of 23 those affected, and 24 HR 8047 2022 hr8047-00 Page 2 of 2 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S WHEREAS, increased awareness of VATER Syndrome and VACTERL 25 Association will bring much -needed attention to current research 26 efforts in this state and encourage further study of the 27 diagnosis and treatment of this mysterious condition, NOW, 28 THEREFORE, 29 30 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 31 Florida: 32 33 That February 2022 is designated as VATER Syndrome 34 Awareness Month in the State of Florida. 35
