HR 8053 2022 hr8053-00 Page 1 of 2 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S House Resolution 1 A resolution recognizing April 2022 as "Autism 2 Awareness Month" in Florida. 3 4 WHEREAS, the symptoms of autism, also known as autism 5 spectrum disorder (ASD), typically appear in children before the 6 age of 3 and are often accompanied by abnormalities in cognitive 7 functioning, learning, attention, and sensory processing, and 8 WHEREAS, Florida has one of the highest rates of ASD in the 9 nation at 4.88 percent of th e state's population, and 10 WHEREAS, according to the most recent statistics released 11 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 12 approximately 1 in 44 children in the United States is living 13 with ASD, and 14 WHEREAS, the CDC reports that althoug h ASD can affect 15 anyone regardless of race, ethnicity, or other factors, it is 16 four times more likely to occur in boys than in girls, and 17 WHEREAS, early intervention significantly improves outcomes 18 and reduces the level of funding and services needed to t reat an 19 individual with ASD later in life, and 20 WHEREAS, parents and relatives of individuals with ASD 21 dedicate endless hours in providing for the special needs of 22 their loved ones, and 23 WHEREAS, the United States House of Representatives and the 24 United States Senate passed House Concurrent Resolution 303 on 25 HR 8053 2022 hr8053-00 Page 2 of 2 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S February 25, 2008, which emphasized the need to support 26 individuals with ASD as well as their family members, teachers, 27 physicians, and caregivers, and 28 WHEREAS, many family members and caregivers work tirelessly 29 to give individuals with ASD the opportunity to realize their 30 ambitions and lead rewarding lives, NOW, THEREFORE, 31 32 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 33 Florida: 34 35 That April 2022 is recognized as "Autism Awareness M onth" 36 in Florida. 37
