Washington advocating for a National Negro Health Week in 9 1915, and 10 WHEREAS, in 2002, the United States Congress said that a 11 National Minority Health and Health Disparities Month, "should 12 be established to promote educational efforts on the health 13 problems facing minorities and other health disparity 14 populations," and 15 WHEREAS, as an example of such health problems and 16 disparities, according to a report by the National Center for 17 Health Statistics, Black women are dying two -and-a-half times 18 more often than white women due to maternal causes, and 19 WHEREAS, a study published in 2019 by a researcher at 20 George Washington University School of Medicine and Health 21 Sciences revealed that Black and Hispanic patients were less 22 likely than white patients to receive medication for acute pain, 23 with the meta-analysis performed in the research demon strating 24 HR 8079 2022 hr8079-00 Page 2 of 2 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S the presence of racial and ethnic disparities in the 25 administration of pain management medication, and 26 WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and 27 Prevention, certain vulnerable populations, such as racial and 28 ethnic minority groups , are at higher risk of getting sick and 29 dying of COVID-19, and 30 WHEREAS, historical inequities in treatment and events like 31 the Tuskegee Syphilis Study may explain why some from racial and 32 ethnic minority groups do not trust healthcare systems and may 33 therefore be more hesitant to get a COVID -19 vaccine, and 34 WHEREAS, the theme of the 202 2 National Minority Health 35 Month is "Give Your Community a Boost ," NOW, THEREFORE, 36 37 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 38 Florida: 39 40 That April 2022 is recognized as "Minority Health Month" in 41 Florida. 42
