A bill to be entitled 1 
An act relating to Alzheimer's disease and related 2 
dementia training for law enforcement officers; 3 
creating s. 943.17299, F.S.; requiring the Department 4 
of Law Enforcement to establish an online, continued 5 
employment training component relating to Alzheimer's 6 
disease and related forms of dementia; requiring that 7 
the training component be developed with the 8 
Department of Elder Affairs; specifying instructio n 9 
requirements for the training component; authorizing 10 
the completion of such training to count toward a 11 
certain requirement; providing an effective date. 12

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 14 
 15 
 Section 1.  Section 943.17299, Flo rida Statutes, is created 16 
to read: 17 
 943.17299  Continued employment training relating to 18 
Alzheimer's disease and related forms of dementia. —The 19 
department shall establish an online, continued employment 20 
training component relating to Alzheimer's disease an d related 21 
forms of dementia. The training component must be developed in 22 
consultation with the Department of Elder Affairs and must 23 
include, but need not be limited to, instruction on interacting 24 
with persons with Alzheimer's disease or a related form of 25

dementia, including instruction on techniques for recognizing 26 
behavioral symptoms and characteristics, effective 27 
communication, employing the use of alternatives to physical 28 
restraints, and identifying signs of abuse, neglect, or 29 
exploitation. Completion of the training component may count 30 
toward the 40 hours of instruction for continued employment or 31 
appointment as a law enforcement officer required under s. 32 
943.135. 33 
 Section 2.  This act shall take effect October 1, 2024. 34
