2024, as "Latin and Hispanic Heritage Month" in 3

WHEREAS, the national, month long celebration known as 6
"Hispanic Heritage Month" is dedicated to the culture, history, 7
and contributions of Latin American and Hispanic countries , and 8
WHEREAS, the celebration begins on September 15 to coincide 9
with the national independence days of Guatemala, Honduras , El 10
Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica , and 11
WHEREAS, the month long celebration includes festivals, art 12
shows, conferences, and community gatherings across the United 13
States, and 14
WHEREAS, there are approximately 6,127,506 Hispanic and 15
Latino people living in Florida, and 16
WHEREAS, Hispanic and Latino Floridians are the second -17
largest racial and ethnic group in the state, making up 28.7 18
percent of the population , and 19
WHEREAS, Hispanic and Latino Floridians contribute to the 20
state's economy in labor and entrepreneurship, and 21
WHEREAS, there are many influential Hispanic and Latino 22
Americans, including civil rights activist and co -founder of the 23
National Farm Workers Association, Caesar Chavez; the first 24
Hispanic American woman to go to space and the first Hispanic 25

woman inducted into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame, 26
Ellen Ochoa; and the first Hispanic American to serve as a 27
member of the United States Supreme Court, Justice Sonia 28
Sotomayor, and 29
WHEREAS, Hispanic and Latino Americans have made a l asting 30
impact in Florida socially, culturally, and economically, 31
including flying to space; being elected to public offices such 32
as Mayor, Lieutenant Governor, and Congress; becoming prominent 33
singers, film stars, and athletes, and 34
WHEREAS, Hispanic and Latin heritage is an integral part of 35
United States and Florida history , NOW, THEREFORE, 36

That September 15 to October 15, 2024, is recognized as 41
"Latin and Hispanic Heritage Mont h" in Florida, to acknowledge 42
and celebrate the contributions of Hispanic and Latin 43
Floridians. 44
