HR 8007 2025 hr8007-00 Page 1 of 3 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S House Resolution 1 A resolution recognizing March 2025 as "Blood Clot 2 Awareness Month" in Florida. 3 4 WHEREAS, a blood clot is a mass of blood that forms when 5 platelets, proteins, and cells in the blood stick together which 6 may naturally occur after an injury to stop bleeding and to help 7 the wound heal, and 8 WHEREAS, blood clots can be dangerous if they form where 9 they should not, the body makes too many blood clots or abnormal 10 blood clots, or the blood clots that formed to stop bleeding do 11 not break down following an injury, and 12 WHEREAS, blood clots do not discriminate by age, gender, 13 ethnicity, or race and may lead to illness, disability, or even 14 death if not treated early, and 15 WHEREAS, as indicated by the public education campaign 16 "Stop the Clot, Spread the Word," made possible through the 17 partnership of the National Blood Clot Alliance and the Centers 18 for Disease Control and Prevention, up to 900,000 people are 19 negatively affected by blood clots every year, and 20 WHEREAS, an estimated 100,000 Americans die annually due to 21 blood clots and many others have long-term complications, and 22 WHEREAS, blood clots may be further defined as deep vein 23 thrombosis or pulmonary embolisms, and 24 HR 8007 2025 hr8007-00 Page 2 of 3 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S WHEREAS, deep vein thrombosis occurs if a blood clot forms 25 in one of the large veins, typically in a person's lower leg, 26 thigh, pelvis, or arm which may partly or completely block the 27 flow of blood or blood circulation in the body, and if 28 untreated, it can travel to the lungs, causing a blockage known 29 as a pulmonary embolism, which requires immediate medical 30 attention, and 31 WHEREAS, it is important to recognize the signs and 32 symptoms of a blood clot and deep vein thrombosis which often 33 presents as swelling, pain, tenderness, and redness or 34 discoloration of the skin at the affected area, and 35 WHEREAS, a pulmonary embolism is oft en associated with 36 difficulty breathing, a faster than normal or irregular 37 heartbeat, coughing up blood, and very low blood pressure, 38 lightheadedness, or fainting, and 39 WHEREAS, the negative consequences of blood clots are 40 preventable, and the best ways to avoid them include knowing the 41 risk factors, recognizing the signs and symptoms, informing a 42 medical professional of any risk factors, speaking with a 43 medical professional about blood clots before any surgical 44 procedure, and seeing a medical professional as soon as possible 45 when symptoms emerge, and 46 WHEREAS, to better inform the public of the risks, signs, 47 and symptoms of blood clots, the National Blood Clot Alliance 48 HR 8007 2025 hr8007-00 Page 3 of 3 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S annually promotes March as "Blood Clot Awareness Month," NOW, 49 THEREFORE, 50 51 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 52 Florida: 53 54 That the month of March 2025 is recognized as "Blood Clot 55 Awareness Month" in the State of Florida in order to raise 56 public awareness of prevention measures and of the signs and 57 symptoms of blood clots and to help residents of this state 58 avoid the negative health consequences associated with blood 59 clots. 60
