A RESOLUTION
Recognizing October 20, 2024, as Mashujaa Day; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mashujaa Day, known as Heroes' Day, is a national holiday in Kenya dedicated2
to honoring the valor and sacrifices of individuals who contributed significantly to the3
struggle for Kenya's independence and those who have positively shaped post-independence4
Kenya; and5
WHEREAS, observed annually on October 20, Mashujaa Day has evolved from its original6
commemoration as Kenyatta Day, named after Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first prime minister7
and president, to encompass a broader recognition of heroes across various spheres of8
Kenyan society; and9
WHEREAS, the holiday further pays tribute to the historical significance of the Kapenguria10
Six, which includes Jomo Kenyatta and prominent figures Achieng Oneko, Bildad Kaggia,11
Fred Kubai, Kung'u Karumba, and Paul Ngei, who were instrumental in the nation's12
liberation struggle; and13

WHEREAS, the day not only represents a time for reflection on the sacrifices made by these
14
individuals but also celebrates the spirit of unity, freedom, and progress that now defines15
Kenya; and16
WHEREAS, Mashujaa Day is celebrated with a variety of national and local events that17
honor the rich heritage and diversity of Kenya, including military parades, cultural festivities,18
and community gatherings; and19
WHEREAS, this holiday stands as testament to the importance of acknowledging and20
honoring the contributions of both known and unsung heroes in shaping Kenya's history and21
future, and it is abundantly fitting and proper that we join in this celebration.22
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that23
the members of this body October 20, 2024, as Mashujaa Day in recognition of those who24
have sacrificed and contributed greatly in support of the independence, growth, and success25
of Kenya.26
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized27
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the28
public and the press.29
