R. 602 - 1 - House Resolution 602 By: Representative Mainor of the 56 th A RESOLUTION Recognizing Ms. Charlayne Hunter-Gault and dedicating a road in her honor; and for other 1 purposes.2 WHEREAS, Ms. Charlayne Hunter-Gault grew up in the Hunter Hills community of Atlanta,3 Georgia, where she attended Henry McNeal Turner High School and served as4 editor-in-chief of the school's newspaper, assistant yearbook editor, and was voted "Miss5 Turner High"; and6 WHEREAS, she was a pioneer in the integration of the University of Georgia on January 9,7 1961, as one of the first two African-American students to enroll in the university and8 graduated in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in journalism; and9 WHEREAS, Ms. Hunter-Gault served as a correspondent for National Public Radio, CNN,10 and the Public Broadcasting Service; and11 WHEREAS, during her prestigious career, she has been recognized with numerous awards12 and honors, including two Emmys and a Peabody for excellence in broadcast journalism, the13 1986 Journalist of the Year Award from the National Association of Black Journalists, a14 23 LC 39 3937 H. R. 602 - 2 - Candace Award for Journalism from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, and the 15 1990 Sidney Hillman Award; and16 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkable and distinguished17 Georgian be appropriately recognized by dedicating a road in her honor.18 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL19 ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the portion of State Route 9 South (Spring Street) from20 Peachtree Street to 14th Street in Fulton County is dedicated as the Charlayne Hunter-Gault21 Parkway.22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and23 directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Charlayne Hunter-Gault24 Parkway.25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized26 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to Ms.27 Charlayne Hunter-Gault and to the Department of Transportation.28
