R. 607 - 1 - House Resolution 607 By: Representative Cannon of the 58 th A RESOLUTION Commending and congratulating Calvin Peterson; and for other purposes. 1 WHEREAS, a long-time member of the grassroots organization Disabled in Action (DIA),2 Calvin Peterson has been involved in disability advocacy for more than 40 years and has3 been a leader in the fight for disability rights in New York City and beyond; and4 WHEREAS, he has served DIA in various leadership positions and has been a strong5 advocate for accessible public transportation, housing, and health care for people with6 disabilities; and7 WHEREAS, in addition to his work with DIA, he has further served as a representative to8 the United Nations as well as a member of the New York State Independent Living Council,9 a board member of the National Council on Independent Living, and a co-founder of the10 Coalition of Disabled Musicians; and11 WHEREAS, he has been recognized for his advocacy work with numerous awards, including12 the Disability Rights and Independent Living Movement Award from the National Council13 on Independent Living and the Justin Dart Award from the American Association of People14 with Disabilities; and15 23 LC 112 1608 H. R. 607 - 2 - WHEREAS, this distinguished gentleman has given inspiration to many through his high 16 ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens; and 17 WHEREAS, Calvin Peterson possesses the vast wisdom which only comes through18 experience and the strength of character which is achieved through overcoming the many19 challenges of life; and20 WHEREAS, he is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for21 integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness; and22 WHEREAS, he has witnessed a dramatic change in the world over the course of his lifetime23 and we salute his contribution to its progress through his tireless efforts on behalf of his24 community and state; and25 WHEREAS, by the example Calvin Peterson has made of his life, he makes this world a26 better place in which to live, and it is only fitting and proper that he be appropriately27 recognized during this very special and memorable time.28 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that29 the members of this body commend Calvin Peterson for his unselfish, dedicated, and loving30 service to the members of his family, community, and state; congratulate him on the31 remarkable occasion of his 75th birthday; and extend their most sincere best wishes for32 continued health and happiness.33 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized34 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to35 Calvin Peterson.36
