R. 426 - 1 - Senate Resolution 426 By: Senators Rahman of the 5th, Jones II of the 22nd and Rhett of the 33rd A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending the Country of Bangladesh; and for other purposes. 1 WHEREAS, Bangladesh declared its independence on March 26, 1971, was recognized by2 the United States on April 4, 1972, and this year celebrates 51 years of diplomatic relations;3 and4 WHEREAS, more than 30,000 Bangladeshi Americans reside in the State of Georgia and5 approximately half a million live and work in the United States; and6 WHEREAS, during the past 51 years, the United States and Bangladesh have remained7 closely engaged on a range of issues, including trade, economy, security, governance8 development, and many other global issues; and9 WHEREAS, the ties between the United States and Bangladesh go beyond the10 government-to-government level as people-to-people contacts and commercial relationships11 are increasing over the years, and both countries are willing to see this relationship grow in12 depth and dimension over the next 51 years; and13 23 LC 112 1674 S. R. 426 - 2 - WHEREAS, Bangladesh and the United States share similar views on many international 14 issues, including maintaining international peace, security, and stability; the fight against15 terrorism and violent extremism; human rights; the 2030 agenda for sustainable16 development; climate change; and many more; and17 WHEREAS, Bangladesh always remembers and recognizes the contributions of the18 American people and their senators and representatives, particularly Senator Ted Kennedy,19 who supported Bangladesh during the war of liberation in 1971; and20 WHEREAS, Bangladesh has made significant socioeconomic progress in the last 51 years,21 including increased food production, disaster resilience, poverty alleviation, improved health22 and education, and women's empowerment; and23 WHEREAS, for more than a decade, Bangladesh has remained one of the fastest growing24 economies in the world, and its economic growth is not only benefitting its own people but25 is also contributing to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the region; and26 WHEREAS, the United States has been a long-standing partner of Bangladesh in this27 successful journey of economic and social development and the two-way trade volume28 between the two countries has recently surpassed $9 billion; and29 WHEREAS, the United States appreciates the generous role of the Government of30 Bangladesh in sheltering more than one million Rohingyas; the United States is the largest31 contributor to the Rohingya crisis response, providing humanitarian support of over32 $1 billion; and33 23 LC 112 1674 S. R. 426 - 3 - WHEREAS, Bangladesh also appreciates the United States for providing 61 million doses 34 of COVID vaccines to Bangladesh and supporting Bangladesh in the management of the35 COVID pandemic.36 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body37 recognize and commend the Country of Bangladesh and extend best wishes for continued38 success.39 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed40 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the41 press.42
