Mixon and dedicating a building in his honor; and for other 1 purposes.2 WHEREAS, Mr. John W. Mixon has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for3 the vital role that he has played in leadership and his deep personal commitment to the4 welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and5 WHEREAS, Mr. Mixon began his career as a conservation stalwart in 1961 as a forest6 technician with the Georgia Forestry Commission and served as the head of the commission's7 nationally recognized Urban Forestry Program; and 8 WHEREAS, he worked to accelerate wood energy promotions by conducting demonstrations9 at public schools, prisons, hospitals, and other institutions to show how wood materials could10 replace expensive fuels; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Mixon was named commissioner of the Georgia Forestry Commission in12 1983 and during his tenure as commissioner he oversaw great conservation efforts, including13 a record number of trees planted in a single season with 433,000 acres of pine trees and the14 H. R. 121 - 1 - 25 LC 60 0100S/AP establishment of the Flint River Nursery which was designed to produce 50 million 15 seedlings; and 16 WHEREAS, his leadership was instrumental in the passage of numerous laws relating to17 forest conservation, including laws that required a permit for outdoor burning and provided18 for prescribed burning for forest management; and19 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments and20 contributions of this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be recognized appropriately by21 dedicating a building in his honor.22 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL23 ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the Georgia Forestry Commission building located in Dry24 Branch, Georgia, is dedicated as the John W. Mixon Georgia Forestry Building.25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Georgia Forestry Commission is authorized and26 directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the John W. Mixon Georgia27 Forestry Building to be funded from the budget of the Georgia Forestry Commission.28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized29 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the30 Georgia Forestry Commission and Mr. John W.
