A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending the National Council of Negro Women; and for other

purposes.2
WHEREAS, the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was founded in 1935 by Dr.3
Mary McLeod Bethune, an influential educator and activist, and for more than 50 years, the4
iconic Dr. Dorothy Irene Height served as national president; and5
WHEREAS, NCNW is an "organization of organizations" composed of 330 campus and6
community-based sections as well as 38 national women's organizations, enlightening,7
inspiring, and connecting more than two million women and men; and8
WHEREAS, NCNW programs are grounded on a foundation of critical concerns known as9
"NCNW Priorities," which include advocating for education; encouraging entrepreneurship,10
financial literacy, and economic stability; informing women about health; promoting11
healthcare access; upholding civic engagement; and campaigning for sound public policy and12
social justice; and13
WHEREAS, the State Coalition of Georgia for NCNW was established on August 20, 2016,14
through the efforts of Dr. A. Lois Keith, with Shara Denton of Valdosta, Georgia, elected as15

the first state president to bolster NCNW's mission of leading, empowering, and advocating
16
for African American women, their families, and their communities; and17
WHEREAS, the State Coalition of Georgia for NCNW is now led by Dr. Darlene18
Ruffin-Alexander, convening over 13 community sections and 16 collegiate sections19
throughout the state and hosting the annual NCNW Day at the Capitol as well as biennial20
Leadership Training, State Conferences, and Bethune/Height Recognition Programs; and21
WHEREAS, the State Coalition of Georgia is dedicated to sustaining the Core-4 priorities22
of NCNW, which include Economic Empowerment and Entrepreneurship, Education23
Empowerment and STEAM, Health Equity, and Social Justice.24
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that25
the members of this body recognize and commend the National Council of Negro Women26
for its many outstanding contributions on behalf of women in this state and beyond as well27
as extend best wishes for continued success.28
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized29
and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the30
National Council of Negro Women.31
