25 LC 112 2904 House Resolution 175 By: Representatives Draper of the 90 th , Olaleye of the 59 th , Sanchez of the 42 nd , Santos of the 117 th , and Cannon of the 58 th A RESOLUTION Recognizing February 5, 2025, as Latino Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes. 1 WHEREAS, Georgia is home to more than one million people of Latin American heritage2 who are part of the economic, social, and cultural fabric of the state, and their daily3 contributions need to be recognized, uplifted, and honored as integral to Georgia; and4 WHEREAS, Latinos in Georgia are a young community yet are very active in all sectors.5 Latino men participate in the workforce in Georgia at higher rates than any other6 demographic group, Latinas turn out to vote at higher rates than the national average, and a7 third of the community is under 18 years old and actively working to pursue their educational8 aspirations; and9 WHEREAS, Latinos have been an integral part of building the state and its economic10 standing, including workers in carpet manufacturing in Whitfield County, the poultry11 industry in Hall County, the agricultural sector in rural areas and South Georgia, in retail12 through entrepreneurship as a self-sufficiency strategy, in the military and law enforcement,13 professionally in corporations and businesses, in the public and nonprofit sector, and14 academically through institutions of higher education; and15 H. R. 175 - 1 - 25 LC 112 2904 WHEREAS, Latinos are well known for their appreciation of family and community as well 16 as their joy and optimism; and17 WHEREAS, Latinos provide an immense amount of arts and culture to the State of Georgia18 and have a vast array of artisans and folkloric groups from all nations in Latin America and19 the Caribbean, from Mexico to Argentina as well as from Puerto Rico and Brazil to Peru; and20 WHEREAS, this diverse community will continue growing to represent a significant21 percentage of Georgia, and it is expected its representation and civic participation will only22 increase.23 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that24 the members of this body recognize February 5, 2025, as Latino Day at the state capitol.25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized26 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the27 public and the press.28 H.
