25 LC 112 3277 House Resolution 541 By: Representative Burns of the 159 th A RESOLUTION Honoring the legacy of the Battle of Brier Creek; and for other purposes. 1 WHEREAS, the Battle of Brier Creek, fought on March 3, 1779, in Screven County,2 Georgia, was a pivotal conflict in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolutionary3 War, where British forces under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Campbell4 achieved a decisive victory over American forces led by General John Ashe; and5 WHEREAS, this battle marked a significant moment in the conflict, as the British victory at6 Brier Creek not only allowed them to maintain a foothold in Georgia but also paved the way7 for their subsequent invasion of South Carolina, which was critical to the continuation of8 British efforts to subdue the southern colonies; and9 WHEREAS, the destruction of the bridge over Brier Creek by British forces, combined with10 a surprise flanking maneuver, led to the swift defeat of American troops, resulting in a rout11 and a major setback for the Patriot cause in Georgia and the Carolinas; and12 WHEREAS, the Battle of Brier Creek is a vital yet often overlooked chapter in the history13 of the American Revolution, contributing significantly to the broader understanding of the14 H.
