A RESOLUTION
Recognizing March 2025 as Blood Clot Awareness Month in the State of Georgia; and for

other purposes.2
WHEREAS, it is the custom of this legislative body to help increase awareness of serious3
health conditions that affect the lives of citizens of the State of Georgia; and4
WHEREAS, attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-standing traditions,5
this legislative body is justly proud to recognize this month in conjunction with the6
observance of National Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism Awareness Month;7
and8
WHEREAS, blood clots are a major health threat in the State of Georgia and around the9
country; and10
WHEREAS, the United States Congress has designated March as Blood Clot Awareness11
Month; and12

WHEREAS, according to the National Blood Clot Alliance, someone is diagnosed with a
13
blood clot every minute and a blood clot kills someone every six minutes, resulting in14
100,000 deaths each year; and15
WHEREAS, blood clots do not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity, or race; they affect16
people from all walks of life, including infants, young children, teenagers, people in middle17
age, and senior citizens across the State of Georgia; and18
WHEREAS, blood clots are a leading cause of death of new mothers in childbirth; and19
WHEREAS, blood clots affect people being treated for cancer and other chronic diseases as20
well as people undergoing joint replacement surgery and other surgical procedures; and21
WHEREAS, blood clots can be triggered by a genetic predisposition or by lengthy22
immobility, and they can affect the more than five million Americans with heartbeat23
problems, which places them at heightened risk of a clot in the heart that can travel to the24
brain and cause stroke and death; and25
WHEREAS, blood clots are the leading cause of unnecessary hospital re-admissions,26
representing an estimated cost of more than $10 billion of the $16 billion expended in the27
treatment of blood clots at hospitals nation-wide; and28
WHEREAS, many of the risks for life-threatening blood clots increase as people age, and so29
too will the public health challenge; and30

WHEREAS, fortunately, many blood clots can be prevented, but when they do occur, poor

outcomes including death, disease, and recurrence can be preventable with early and accurate32
diagnosis and management; and33
WHEREAS, it is imperative that there be greater awareness of this serious health condition,34
and more must be done to increase activity at the local, state and national levels.35
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that36
the members of this body recognize March 2025 as Blood Clot Awareness Month in the State37
of Georgia.38
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized39
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the40
public and the press.41
