A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
To amend Chapter 12 of Title 31 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to

control of hazardous conditions, preventable diseases, and metabolic disorders, so as to2
require testing for Duchenne muscular dystrophy in the newborn screening system; to3
provide for related matters; to provide for an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and4
for other purposes.5
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:6
SECTION 1.7
Chapter 12 of Title 31 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to control of8
hazardous conditions, preventable diseases, and metabolic disorders, is amended by revising9
subsection (a) of Code Section 31-12-6, relating to a system for prevention of serious illness,10
severe physical or developmental disability, and death resulting from inherited metabolic and11
genetic disorders, and establishment of Newborn Screening and Genetics Advisory12
Committee, as follows:13
"(a)  The department shall promulgate rules and regulations creating a newborn screening14
system, which shall include screening for Duchenne muscular dystrophy,
 for the prevention15
of serious illness, severe physical or developmental disability, and death caused by16

inherited metabolic and genetic disorders as identified by the department.  The department
17
shall be authorized to consider recommendations from the Newborn Screening and18
Genetics Advisory Committee established pursuant to subsection (i) of this Code section,19
to include disorders which are added to the federal Recommended Uniform Screening20
Panel and may be identified in the future to result in serious illness, severe physical or21
developmental disability, and death if undiagnosed and untreated."22
SECTION 2.23
This Act shall become effective on January 1, 2026.24
SECTION 3.25
All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.26
