25 LC 112 3239 Senate Resolution 335 By: Senators Anderson of the 43rd, Davenport of the 17th, Wicks of the 34th, Jones II of the 22nd, Jackson of the 41st and others A RESOLUTION Recognizing March 4, 2025, as Oxford Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes. 1 WHEREAS, founded in 1836 as Emory College, Oxford College has a long and2 distinguished history that reflects its deep connection to the Methodist Church and its integral3 role within the broader Emory University community; and4 WHEREAS, the college transitioned to its current designation as Oxford College in 1964,5 becoming a two-year liberal arts institution dedicated to providing a rigorous academic6 foundation for its students; and7 WHEREAS, located in Oxford, Georgia, Oxford College offers students a unique educational8 experience that combines the benefits of a close-knit campus environment with the vast9 resources of a world-renowned research university; and10 WHEREAS, Oxford College plays a vital role in the Newton County economy, contributing11 more than $80 million annually, attracting over 12,000 visitors, and supporting over 52012 local jobs and 1,500 jobs statewide; and13 S. R. 335 - 1 - 25 LC 112 3239 WHEREAS, students at Oxford College are deeply engaged in community service, 14 partnering with more than 65 local organizations, nonprofits, civic groups, and educational15 institutions to contribute over 13,000 volunteer hours each year; and16 WHEREAS, Oxford College has remained steadfast in its commitment to academic17 excellence, fostering an environment where students benefit from close faculty interactions,18 personalized learning experiences, and a strong sense of community; and19 WHEREAS, the college has upheld a tradition of intellectual growth, resilience, and service,20 shaping students who not only excel academically but also develop socially and personally21 through meaningful engagement with their peers and the wider world; and22 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this distinguished academic institution23 be appropriately honored during this special time.24 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body25 recognize March 4, 2025, as Oxford Day at the state capitol and commend Oxford College26 for its rich history, academic excellence, and ongoing contributions to Newton County, the27 State of Georgia, and beyond.28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed29 to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Oxford College.30 S.
