25 LC 112 2715 Senate Resolution 64 By: Senators McLaurin of the 14th, Brass of the 6th, Williams of the 25th, Kemp of the 38th, Payne of the 54th and others A RESOLUTION Recognizing February 7 to 14, 2025, as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week at the 1 state capitol; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, congenital heart defects are one of the most frequently occurring birth defects3 and a leading cause of deaths related to birth defects worldwide; and4 WHEREAS, more than one million families across America face the challenges and5 hardships of raising children with congenital heart defects, and each year, approximately6 40,000 babies are born in the United States with these conditions; and7 WHEREAS, some congenital heart defects are not diagnosed until months or years after8 birth; when these conditions go undiagnosed, they can cause many cases of sudden cardiac9 death in young athletes; and10 WHEREAS, despite these alarming statistics, newborns and young athletes are still not11 regularly screened for congenital heart defects; and12 WHEREAS, Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week provides an opportunity for families13 whose lives have been affected by congenital heart defects to celebrate life, remember the14 S. R. 64 - 1 - 25 LC 112 2715 loved ones they have lost, honor dedicated health professionals, and share information with 15 the public and the media.16 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body17 recognize February 7 to 14, 2025, as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week at the state18 capitol.19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed20 to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Children's21 Healthcare of Atlanta and its Kids at Heart program.22 S.
