NO. 100 THIRTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE, 2025 STATE OF HAWAII SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION encouraging the board of land and natural resources to rename kalopa state park on the island of hawaii the mark nakashima kalopa state park. WHEREAS, state Representative Mark Nakashima was born in Hilo, Hawaii, but spent most of his life in close vicinity to Kalopa State Park following the relocation of his family to Kalopa during his sophomore year of high school; and WHEREAS, Representative Nakashima frequently visited Kalopa State Park with his grandfather and sister, enjoying many summer days with a bento box lunch and his family's company in the Park's forests; and WHEREAS, Representative Nakashima began his career as a public school teacher at Honokaa High and Intermediate School and regularly volunteered to serve his community through his membership with the Hamakua Lions Club International and Hawaii Junior Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, first elected to the House of Representatives to represent District 1, Hamakua, Hilo, in 2008, Representative Nakashima continued to serve his community in this role until his death in 2024; and WHEREAS, during his seventeen year tenure, Representative Nakashima served as Chair of the House Committee on Consumer Protection and Commerce and was known for his intelligence and kindness; and WHEREAS, Representative Nakashima deserves to be honored for his leadership and commitment to the State; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2025, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Board of Land and Natural Resources is encouraged to rename the Kalopa State Park on the island of Hawaii the Mark Nakashima Kalopa State Park; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources and Administrator of the Division of State Parks of the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
