H.F. 2465 Section 1. Section 256.11, subsection 5, paragraph a, Code 1 2024, is amended to read as follows: 2 a. Five units of science including . 3 (1) The five units of science shall include physics and 4 chemistry ; the units of physics and chemistry , which may be 5 taught in alternate years. 6 (2) The five units of science may include instruction 7 related to agriculture, which may be offered and taught through 8 dedicated units of coursework or through units of coursework 9 that also meet the requirements of the coursework required 10 under paragraph h , subparagraph (1), subparagraph division 11 (a). The state board shall adopt rules pursuant to chapter 17A 12 to implement this subparagraph. 13 Sec. 2. Section 256E.7, subsection 2, paragraph g, Code 14 2024, is amended to read as follows: 15 g. Be subject to and comply with the requirements of section 16 256.7, subsection 21 , and the educational standards of section 17 256.11 , unless specifically waived by the state board during 18 the application process ; provided, however, that the state 19 board shall not waive the educational standards established 20 in section 256.11, subsection 5, paragraph a , related to 21 the use of instruction related to agriculture to fulfill unit 22 requirements related to science . 23 Sec. 3. Section 256F.4, subsection 2, Code 2024, is amended 24 by adding the following new paragraph: 25 NEW PARAGRAPH . p. Be subject to and comply with the 26 requirements of section 256.11, subsection 5, paragraph a , 27 relating to the use of instruction related to agriculture to 28 fulfill unit requirements related to science in the same manner 29 as a school district. 30 EXPLANATION 31 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 32 the explanations substance by the members of the general assembly. 33 This bill modifies provisions related to the curriculum 34 provided to students enrolled in grades 9 through 12 in school 35 -1- LSB 5682HV (2) 90 jda/jh 1/ 2
H.F. 2465 districts, accredited nonpublic schools, charter schools, and 1 innovation zone schools by allowing instruction related to 2 agriculture to meet a portion of the unit requirements related 3 to science. The bill provides that such instruction related to 4 agriculture may be taught through dedicated units of coursework 5 or through units of coursework that also meet the requirements 6 related to agriculture, food, and natural resources instruction 7 under the career and technical education curriculum.
