1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate the Zion Lutheran Church
4 of Rockford on the occasion of its 140th anniversary; and
5 WHEREAS, The Zion Lutheran Church marked August 7, 2023 as
6 the 140th anniversary of its founding by a handful of Swedish
7 immigrants; and
8 WHEREAS, Over the past century, the Zion Lutheran Church
9 has grown from approximately 100 members to over 2,000
10 members, staying rooted in the neighborhood of the 61104 zip
11 code; and
12 WHEREAS, Although the Zion Lutheran Church has experienced
13 war, depression, and doubt in its long history, the church's
14 spirit has continued to shine bright in the darkness; and
15 WHEREAS, Through its Community Development Partnerships,
16 the Zion Lutheran Church has invested over 40 million dollars
17 in neighborhood redevelopment; and
18 WHEREAS, The Zion Lutheran Church has been instrumental in
19 creating the Zion Development housing agency, the Patriots
20 Gateway Community Center, the Buddy House program at Blackhawk

1 Apartments, Katie's Cup Coffee Bar, the Rockford Midtown
2 Market, and Cars & Coffee Rockford; and
3 WHEREAS, The Zion Lutheran Church has a tradition of loyal
4 family membership, with many congregants having been members
5 all their lives, and their parents and grandparents have
6 faithfully labored for the Church; and
7 WHEREAS, The Zion Lutheran Church has a long history of
8 supporting missionary work and providing basic needs through
9 its ministries and partnerships in this country and overseas;
10 therefore, be it
11 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12 HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13 we congratulate the Zion Lutheran Church of Rockford on its
14 140th anniversary; and be it further
15 RESOLVED, That we recognize the Zion Lutheran Church's
16 humanitarian efforts; and be it further
17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to Pastor Michael Thomas of the Zion Lutheran Church
19 as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
