1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate the members of the 1974
4 Western Illinois University (WIU) baseball team on the 50th
5 anniversary of their incredible season; and
6 WHEREAS, WIU has had an intercollegiate baseball team
7 since the 1903-1904 season; and
8 WHEREAS, In 1974, the WIU baseball team broke the school
9 record for most victories in a single season, finishing with
10 31 wins and 12 losses, a record that went unbroken for 32
11 years; and
12 WHEREAS, As a result of its unprecedented season, the 1974
13 WIU baseball team received a NCAA at-large bid to play in the
14 1974 NCAA Mid-East Regional Tournament and advanced to the
15 championship game, only one game away from the Division II
16 College World Series; and
17 WHEREAS, Over the course of the season, the 1974 WIU
18 baseball team set or broke 30 team or individual records, many
19 of which remain unbeaten to this day; and
20 WHEREAS, The 1974 WIU baseball team was led by Dick

1 Pawlow, who oversaw WIU baseball from 1970 to 1998, becoming
2 the school's longest-serving head coach; the team was also led
3 by co-captains Fred Dintelman and Gerry Grybash; and
4 WHEREAS, The 1974 WIU baseball team, one of the greatest
5 teams in WIU Athletics history, was inducted into the WIU
6 Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019; and
7 WHEREAS, The 1974 WIU baseball team possesses several
8 inductees to the WIU Athletics Hall of Fame, including pitcher
9 and team MVP Ed Gvazdinskas in 1994, second baseman Dennis
10 Mantick in 2003, and head coach Dick Pawlow in 2004; and
11 WHEREAS, The members of the 1974 WIU baseball team will be
12 celebrating the 50th anniversary of their successful season
13 during the WIU Baseball Alumni Weekend in Macomb from May 3 to
14 May 5, 2024; therefore, be it
15 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16 HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17 we congratulate the members of the 1974 Western Illinois
18 University (WIU) baseball team on the 50th anniversary of
19 their incredible season; and be it further
20 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be given
21 to the players and coaches of the 1974 WIU baseball team as an
