1  HOUSE RESOLUTION
2  WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3  Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Thomas
4  Owen "Tom" Kuhl of Springfield, who passed away on March 16,
5  2025; and
6  WHEREAS, Tom Kuhl was born in Chicago to Mary (Owen) and
7  Capt. Marion Kuhl on May 5, 1944; he attended St. Joseph
8  Parochial School in Mattoon and graduated from Mattoon Senior
9  High School in 1962; he attended the University of Illinois
10  and graduated from Eastern Illinois University; he served his
11  country in the U.S. Army from October 1968 to July 1970, which
12  included a year in Vietnam; he married Diana Lou Glasscock in
13  1971; he married Jan (Hinton) Lane on May 19, 2000; and
14  WHEREAS, Tom Kuhl worked for the Illinois Consolidated
15  Telephone Company for a total of 26 years; he then worked for
16  the State of Illinois for over 18 years; in addition, he was
17  part-owner of Knowles Cafeteria and taught as adjunct faculty
18  at Lakeland College in Mattoon; and
19  WHEREAS, Tom Kuhl was committed to helping his fellow
20  veterans, which was evident through his participation in the
21  Lincoln Land Honor Flight program; and

1  WHEREAS, Tom Kuhl was an election judge for 28 years; he
2  was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, where he served as
3  an usher; he had a passion for the outdoors and was a Boy Scout
4  and president of the high school rifle team in his youth; he
5  was a member of Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree, beginning in
6  1973 and serving as their treasurer from 1974 to 1998, and a
7  member of Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, beginning in 1974
8  and serving as their comptroller from 1976 to 1998; he was also
9  a member of the Mattoon Rifle & Pistol Club and the Moose,
10  Eagles, and Abraham Lincoln gun clubs; and
11  WHEREAS, Tom Kuhl enjoyed riding and working on
12  motorcycles and Corvettes and tinkering with cars, computers,
13  and firearms; he found great joy in spending time with his
14  grandchildren and traveling with Jan; and
15  WHEREAS, Tom Kuhl was preceded in death by his first wife,
16  Diana; his parents; his stepdaughter, Kristen Lane-Brunson;
17  and his step-grandchildren, Jocelyn and Myles; and
18  WHEREAS, Tom Kuhl is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jan;
19  his children, Christina (Matt) Kuhl Wools and John Thomas
20  (Angie) Kuhl; his stepson, Robert Lane; his grandchildren,
21  Jacob and Jared Wools, and Elise, Ian, and Celine Kuhl; and
22  many close friends; therefore, be it

1  RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2  HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3  we mourn the passing of Thomas Owen "Tom" Kuhl and extend our
4  sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
5  and loved him; and be it further
6  RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7  presented to the family of Tom Kuhl as an expression of our
8  deepest sympathy.
