It permits certain exempted minors to work at farm labor during school hours on a school day. It also permits certain exempted minors to work during school hours on a school day with limitations. Effective Date: July 1, 2024. Explanation of State Expenditures: Enforcing child labor laws are within the Indiana Department of Labor’s routine administrative functions and should be able to be implemented with no additional appropriations, assuming near customary agency staffing and resource levels. Additional Information - Federal child labor law does not allow a minor under the age of 16 to work during school hours. In cases where federal law is more protective than state law, federal law still applies. A child labor bulletin published by the U.S. Department of Labor regarding child labor requirements in agricultural occupations mentions that a minor aged 14 and older may be allowed to work during school hours if they have been excused from attending school based on religious reasons and meet the requirements of the state’s educational attendance laws.
