Summary of Legislation: This bill allows a juvenile court to extend the time to complete a factfinding
hearing for a child in need of services (CHINS) petition under certain conditions. It prohibits a juvenile court
from granting a continuance in a termination of parent-child relationship (TPR) proceeding unless the motion
is filed by a proper person and is accompanied by certain evidence.
Effective Date:  July 1, 2024.
Explanation of State Expenditures: To the extent the Department of Child Services (DCS) does not provide
evidence for a good faith reason to file a motion of continuance in a TPR proceeding, this provision will have
minimal workload impact on the DCS. The DCS should be able to accomplish the task within existing
resources.

existing resources.
