Shackleford BILL STATUS: As Introduced FIRST SPONSOR: FUNDS AFFECTED:XGENERAL IMPACT: State DEDICATED FEDERAL Summary of Legislation: The bill requires the Medical Licensing Board of Indiana to adopt rules requiring a physician and a physician assistant who apply for a license or renewal to complete continuing education addressing the topic of implicit bias. The bill requires the Indiana State Board of Nursing to adopt rules requiring a nurse who applies for a license or renewal to complete continuing education addressing the topic of implicit bias. The bill establishes certain requirements for an implicit bias continuing education course. Provides that the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) must maintain on the Agency's website a schedule of or link to implicit bias continuing education courses that are available. Effective Date: Upon passage. Explanation of State Expenditures: The PLA could incur an estimated salary cost of $30,800 to $52,700 to adjust rules for IT needs and for continuing education development. Given the effective date of the bill, the requirements may possibly be carried out during FY 2024 and/or FY 2025. Given the bill does not provide an appropriation, the PLA would need to carry out the bill’s requirements within their existing staff and resource levels. Ongoing expenses may occur if additional board meetings are needed past FY 2025 to review or approve continuing education courses.
