Rowray BILL STATUS: As Introduced FIRST SPONSOR: FUNDS AFFECTED:XGENERAL IMPACT: State DEDICATED FEDERAL Summary of Legislation: This bill sets forth certain requirements concerning civics education. It requires the Department of Education, in consultation with the Civic Education Commission and the Indiana Bar Foundation, to report certain information and recommendations related to civics education to the General Assembly. Effective Date: Upon passage. Explanation of State Expenditures: This bill requires the Department of Education (DOE) to prepare and deliver a report to the General Assembly no later than September 1, 2024. It requires DOE to consult with the Civic Education Commission (also an entity of the state) and the Indiana Bar Foundation in consolidating the information and developing the recommendations to be contained in the report. These requirements constitute a workload increase for DOE and the commission but are within the routine administrative functions of each and should be able to be implemented with no additional appropriations, assuming near customary agency staffing and resource levels.
