*HR1516* Introduced Version HOUSE RESOLUTION No. ___ Introduced by: Summers, Jackson ____________________________________ 1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION honoring Alpha Kappa Alpha 2 Sorority, Inc. 3 Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded on 4 January 15, 1908, with a mission to promote unity and 5 friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate 6 problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their 7 social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, 8 and to be of "Service to All Mankind"; 9 Whereas, In 1915, the sorority hosted its first political action 10 conference with Illinois Congressman and human rights activist 11 Martin B. Madden as the speaker; 12 Whereas, Through the years, the sorority's function has 13 become more complex, branching out to engage members 14 worldwide in advocacy and service projects to improve 20242248 HR 1516/DI 140 2024 2 1 socioeconomic, racial, political, and environmental conditions; 2 Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha's diverse, collaborative work 3 throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, 4 and the United Arab Emirates integrates a high level of 5 personal engagement with the strong bonds of sisterhood and 6 a productive network of community partners; 7 Whereas, February 6, 2024, Indiana members of Alpha 8 Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., will participate in "AKA Day at the 9 Indiana State Capitol"; 10 Whereas, The annual event is an opportunity for members to 11 speak with local lawmakers, engage in workshops, and 12 advocate for critical issues, such as Black maternal health and 13 suicide prevention; 14 Whereas, Indiana is home to 20 Alpha Kappa Alpha 15 chapters which are located on college and university campuses 16 and has 12 active alumnae groups in communities throughout 17 the state; 18 Whereas, The central region of the United States is home to 19 96 empowered and engaged chapters serving Illinois, Indiana, 20 Kentucky, Minnesota, southeastern Missouri, North Dakota, 21 South Dakota and Wisconsin; and 22 Whereas, There are two members of Alpha Kappa Alpha 23 currently serving in the Indiana General Assembly: Therefore, 24 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the 25 General Assembly of the State of Indiana: 26 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes 27 February 6, 2024, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Day at 28 the State Capitol. 29 SECTION 2.
