Synopsis:  Suicide prevention materials. Requires each school
corporation to develop a plan: (1) to notify a child's parents if the child
is a victim of bullying or if the child expresses suicidal thoughts; and
(2) to provide the child's parents with certain suicide awareness
materials and firearms storage materials.
Effective:  July 1, 2025.

HOUSE BILL No. 1440
A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
education.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
1 SECTION 1. IC 20-26-5-34.4, AS ADDED BY P.L.254-2017,
2 SECTION 5, IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE
3 JULY 1, 2025]: Sec. 34.4. Each school corporation shall adopt a policy
4 addressing measures intended to increase child suicide awareness and
5 prevention. The policy must address the following:
6 (1) Counseling services for the child and the child's family related
7 to suicide prevention.
8 (2) Availability of referral information for crisis intervention to
9 children, parents, and school corporation staff.
10 (3) Increasing awareness of the relationship between suicide and
11 drug and alcohol use.
12 (4) Training on warning signs and tendencies that may evidence
13 that a child is considering suicide.
14 (5) Availability of information concerning suicide prevention
15 services in the community.
16 (6) Cooperation among the school corporation and suicide
17 prevention services in the community.

1 (7) Development of a plan to assist survivors of attempted suicide
2 and to assist children and school corporation staff in coping with
3 an attempted suicide or death of a student or school employee.
4 (8) Development of a plan to notify a child's parents if the
5 child is a victim of bullying or if the child expresses suicidal
6 thoughts to a school employee, and to provide the child's
7 parents with the following:
8 (A) The suicide awareness and prevention materials and
9 resources compiled under the policy created by this
10 section.
11 (B) The firearms storage best practices and educational
12 materials described in IC 20-19-3-30.4.
13 (C) Any other information or resource that is appropriate.
14 (8) (9) Development of any other program or activity that is
15 appropriate.
