HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION No. 2
1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Indiana
2 Department of Transportation to rename that portion of U.S.
3 Highway 31 from Smith Valley Road to County Line Road the
4 "State Trooper Aaron Smith Memorial Highway".
5 Whereas, State Trooper Aaron Smith was tragically killed on
6 June 28, 2023, while assisting fellow troopers who were in a
7 pursuit of a stolen vehicle on Ronald Reagan Parkway, north
8 of I-70, in Hendricks County;
9 Whereas, State Trooper Aaron Smith grew up in Johnson
10 County and went on to serve in the United States Army
11 National Guard where he received awards for his service;
12 Whereas, Following his time in the National Guard, State
13 Trooper Smith joined the Indiana State Police where he served
14 for five years, also earning two Lifesaving Awards;
15 Whereas, Trooper Smith seemed to go above and beyond in
16 any duty that called. When tornados hit his hometown in
17 Johnson County, he was there to help the community and pick
18 up debris;
19 Whereas, It takes a special individual to serve in the variety
20 of capacities that Trooper Smith did, both with the United
21 States Army National Guard and the Indiana State Police. This
22 selfless service is commendable and an example of what public
23 service looks like; and
24 Whereas, State Trooper Aaron Smith knew he wanted to serve
25 his community from a young age, and he wanted to be a police

1 officer since the age of six. Trooper Smith was the definition of
2 a truly humble public servant who always put others before
3 himself: Therefore,
4 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
5 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
6 the Senate concurring:
7 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly urges the
8 Indiana Department of Transportation to rename that portion of
9 U.S. Highway 31 from Smith Valley Road to County Line Road
10 the "State Trooper Aaron Smith Memorial Highway".
11 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
12 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to the
13 Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation.

COMMITTEE REPORT
Mr. Speaker: Your Committee on Roads and Transportation, to
which was referred House Concurrent Resolution 2, has had the same
under consideration and begs leave to report the same back to the
House with the recommendation that said resolution do pass.
