Pfaff _______________________, read first time and referred to Committee on 20253044 2025 HC 1026/DI 140 Introduced First Regular Session of the 124th General Assembly (2025) HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. ____ 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing the Indiana 2 State University Band program's centennial. 3 Whereas, The Indiana State University Band program has 4 distinguished itself as an ensemble of excellence while 5 representing the Hoosier state throughout the country; 6 Whereas, Indiana State University started its first official 7 band in 1924, but the program took off starting in 1939 under 8 the direction of Joseph A. Gremelspacher, professor of music 9 at the school; 10 Whereas, Gremelspacher developed the band into a national 11 award-winning ensemble, and he authored and arranged the 12 Indiana State fight song, "March On!", which premiered at the 13 homecoming rally on October 20, 1939; 14 Whereas, In 1964, the band performed in Indianapolis during 15 a visit of President Lyndon B. Johnson, and he personally wrote 16 a letter to the then-director of the band program, George 17 Graesch, thanking him for the wonderful performance; 18 Whereas, In 1978, world renowned Kennedy Center honoree 19 Aaron Copland served as composer in residence and guest 20 directed the Indiana State University Wind Ensemble in 21 performing his "Lincoln Portrait", which was narrated by ISU's 22 then-president Richard Landini; 23 Whereas, The band program's annual Contemporary Music 24 Festival, which began in 1966, has featured week-long 25 residencies that have included the Indianapolis Symphony 2025 HC 1026/DI 140 2 1 Orchestra, Louisville Symphony Orchestra, and arts critics 2 from newspapers such as the Cincinnati Enquirer; 3 Whereas, Over its 100 year history, Indiana State University 4 Band alumni can be found performing in professional 5 orchestras, sitting on music college faculties, teaching in public 6 and private secondary schools, and playing for self-enrichment 7 in community bands across the country; and 8 Whereas, Indiana State University Band's current leadership 9 includes Director of Bands Dr. Eric Scott, Associate Director 10 of Bands Dr. Emmanuel Rodriguez, School of Music Director 11 Dr. Peggy Moran, College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. 12 Melinda Roberts, and University President Dr. Mike Godard: 13 Therefore, 14 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives 15 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, 16 the Senate concurring: 17 SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly recognizes the 18 100th anniversary of the Indiana State University Band 19 program. 20 SECTION 2.
