*HR1572* Introduced Version HOUSE RESOLUTION No. ___ Introduced by: Yocum, Heaton ____________________________________ 1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION celebrating the Clay County, 2 Indiana, bicentennial. 3 Whereas, During the Indiana legislative session of 1825, the 4 Indiana General Assembly organized Clay County from 5 sections of surrounding counties and named it after Kentucky 6 statesman Henry Clay; 7 Whereas, Bowling Green was named the county seat as it 8 was the only community in the county founded before 1830. The 9 first post office was opened there in 1825, and the county's first 10 courthouse was completed in 1828; 11 Whereas, Relocation efforts to move the county courthouse 12 and the county seat to Brazil began in 1871, and the relocation 13 was finally granted in 1876. The current Clay County 14 Courthouse was completed in 1914 and continues to serve the 20253102 HR 1572/DI 140 2025 2 1 people of Clay County today; 2 Whereas, Clay County considers itself the true "Crossroads 3 of America" as it is bisected by U.S. Highway 40, I-70, and 4 State Road 59, providing access to key cities, such as 5 Indianapolis, Terre Haute, and beyond; 6 Whereas, Clay County takes pride in its strong industrial 7 base and wide variety of businesses that promote growth and 8 stabilize the economy. Commercial truck and trailer 9 manufacturer Great Dane has called the county home for over 10 30 years and employs more than 1,500 workers. Other 11 industrial leaders with manufacturing operations in Clay 12 County are BrickCraft, Indiana Oxide, Britt Aero, Technifab 13 Products, Morris Manufacturing, Process Development and 14 Fabrication, Inc., and PPG Industrial Coatings, Inc.; 15 Whereas, The Brazil Concert Band, organized in 1858, is 16 one of the longest-running bands in the nation, and regularly 17 performs "Concerts Under the Stars" during the summer 18 months at the open bandshell located in Forest Park; 19 Whereas, Clay County is proud to have five colleges and 20 universities within a 20-mile radius, including DePauw 21 University, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Rose-Hulman 22 Institute of Technology, Indiana State University, and Ivy Tech 23 Community College; and 24 Whereas, The residents of Clay County take pride in their 25 rich history and look forward to what the next 200 years hold 26 for their community: Therefore, 27 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the 28 General Assembly of the State of Indiana: 29 SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives 30 celebrates the 200 year history of Clay County, Indiana. 31 SECTION 2.
