Brief*
HB 2155 would specify that sheriffs have liability for
official acts of the sheriff and sheriff’s sureties related to the
charge and custody of county jails. The bill also makes
technical changes to update outdated language.
Background
The bill was introduced by the House Committee on
Judiciary at the request of a representative of the Kansas
Sheriffs Association.

In the House committee hearing, proponent testimony
was provided by a representative of the Kansas Association
of Chiefs of Police and Kansas Sheriffs Association. The
proponent generally stated the bill would align the statute with
other similar statutes and Kansas case law.
