The Honorable Susan Humphries, Chairperson
House Committee on Judiciary
300 SW 10th Avenue, Room 582-N
Topeka, Kansas 66612

Dear Representative Humphries:

SUBJECT: Fiscal Note for HB 2212 by House Committee on Judiciary

In accordance with KSA 75-3715a, the following fiscal note concerning HB 2212 is
respectfully submitted to your committee.

HB 2212 would increase the amount of money that the Secretary of Corrections may
reimburse inmates for personal injury, property damage, or loss caused by negligence. The bill
would raise the reimbursement cap from $500 to $750. Inmates would be required to provide
notice to the Secretary for claims exceeding $750, though failure to do so would not prevent the
claim from being considered by the Joint Committee on Claims Against the State.

The Department of Corrections indicates that enactment of the bill would have no fiscal
effect on its operations. According to the Department, increasing the reimbursement cap could
increase the number of claims settled directly by the agency, but would not affect the overall
number of claims filed or paid.

 	Sincerely,

 	Adam C. Proffitt
 	Director of the Budget
