Dear Senator Warren:

SUBJECT: Fiscal Note for SB 157 by Senate Committee on Judiciary

In accordance with KSA 75-3715a, the following fiscal note concerning SB 157 is
respectfully submitted to your committee.

SB 157 would require a sheriff to make a copy of a warrant for arrest for failure to appear
for a felony offense available to a compensated surety who deposited a forfeited bond on behalf of
the defendant. The bill would require the court to set aside the forfeiture if the surety can prove
the defendant has left the country or the warrant was not provided to the compensated surety within
14 days of issuance. The bill would require the court, after entry of judgment, to remit 95.0 percent
of the amount of the appearance bond to the obligor if the defendant is returned to custody within
180 days after entry of judgment.

The Office of Judicial Administration indicates enactment of the bill would have a minimal
fiscal effect on the Judicial Branch that could be absorbed within existing resources. Any fiscal
effect associated with SB 157 is not reflected in The FY 2026 Governor’s Budget Report.

 	Sincerely,

 	Adam C. Proffitt
 	Director of the Budget
